"Mr. Kevin Bolden"- Exactly What Epilepsy Needed!

The Author of "The Village"

Lowell G. Evans

Why Mr. Kevin Bolden Was Created!

The Creation of Mr. Kevin Bolden

A name and a face was needed for “Epilepsy”

A health condition people are not always willing to discuss

Still I felt that this was something people needed to understand

So the creation of “The Village and Mr. Kevin Bolden” was a must!

Kevin Bolden was a hard-working, corporate, family man

Here was a happy husband and a loving father of two

All he wanted to do in life was to be very successful

So whatever price he had to pay, he was willing to do!

The people in his neighborhood, “The Village”

Truly admired him for the life he was trying to live

Unfortunately his Employer would not do the same

The corporation saw his condition and put “Epilepsy” before his name!

Because of a “seizure” his Employer now saw him as a Liability

Instead of the “True Asset” he had proven himself to be

Mr. Bolden realized why they began to think like this

It was the “Epilepsy Education” that they seemed to have missed!

So he said, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do”

But how could Kevin Bolden be the “Man” that God made him to be?

It was all because of the people in “The Village”

They saw a successful, educated man who just happened to have Epilepsy!

The Village supported him during his trials and tribulations

For a “Good Husband, Father, and Friend was all they were able to see

Now Kevin Bolden is able to say to anyone, “Yes, I have Epilepsy”

But because of “The Village”, Epilepsy does not have me!

“Words from the Heart”

RE: Lowell Evans and Epilepsy

Not sure where to begin except to say that our lives changed in 2010 when epilepsy entered our world. At the time, our 13 year old daughter had her second grand mal seizure within an 8 month period. After five days and many tests from her wonderful new doctor and neurologist (Dr. Toor) from the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughter in Norfolk, VA the diagnosis was given and a prescription shared. That was the easy part.

The difficulty began with Lauren being withdrawn. Because the seizure happened at a church lock-in, many teens witnessed the episode and were frightened. Many didn’t understand and became distancing themselves. Lauren had no recollection of the event and decided to retreat to the safe harbor of home. All extra activities and interests outside the home disappeared, as did most of the friends to come swim in the pool, hang out and ride bikes. Life as a "normal" teenager didn’t seem anything close to "normal" anymore.

Lauren began online friendships and felt safe there. She didn’t have to tell anyone about epilepsy, they didn’t know her and weren’t there that day. We also moved into a new house and new school, hoping that would help. Unfortunately only the location changed…epilepsy was still there at 8pm when we would take the daily dose of medicines to keep the seizures from returning.

One day at a community luncheon prior to a doctor’s visit to celebrate 2 years seizure free, we were told of Mr. Lowell Evans. A few days later Mr. Evans came to our home to share his story. This was the first time Lauren opened up to talk to someone about epilepsy, her lack of motivation in school or desire to leave her safe harbor of home. He gave her a copy of his book but more importantly shared with her that he has epilepsy, but it doesn’t have him. She smiled and opened up a bit. They became friends and he a source of support for her.

Mr. Evans has called many times on Lauren to encourage her to share her story, which ultimately is a story of God’s love and compassion through all. We like to say we are a work in progress kind of like a caterpillar morphing into a butterfly. As a faithful family, this strength is supported daily and encouraged to be what God desires, despite an epilepsy diagnosis and what others may think. We now look at epilepsy as an opportunity for perhaps a totally different plan in helping educate others in the future…coincidentally the very same idea Mr. Evans has! (At our house we don’t believe in coincidences, but rather the hand of God.)

I could go on and on about our gratitude for Mr. Evans. For the first time I see Lauren opening up, reading on epilepsy and actually talking about what has changed our lives. We try not to look at the negatives or fear the unknown, but rather try to bring good from this diagnosis. I hope you will find this helpful. We feel very blessed to have met Mr. Evans and look forward to spreading the word of epilepsy.

Elder Maurice Hilliard's Prayer

Hello Everyone,

When I first shared my dream of writing a book and how I needed support, I went to a great man that attended church with me at New Life Providence in Va. Beach, Va. This man is Elder Maurice Hilliard.

Truly after spending time with Maurice, he saw a much "Greater Cause" behind my request than I did. My goal was to write my novel, "The Village" and to help others overcome the challenges in life that this condition can sometime bring. These challenges are brought on because there is a "Lack of Knowledge of Epilepsy" in society.

With the "Great Wisdom" that Elder Maurice has, he was able to share the "True Meaning" of The Village in his opening prayer at my first book signing at our church, New Life Providence under the leadership of Pastor Dan Backens. Please read this prayer "slowly" and you will understand why my passion for this mission that God has placed me on is so "deep."

Here is a man who "Truly Understands"! We will be "friends for life." Here he is wearing "The Village T-Shirt" and speaking on my behalf! I read his "prayer" weekly because he understands! Please notice, this prayer is not for "Lowell G. Evans" it is for all of us!

Thank you,
Lowell G.Evans

                                                                   "The Village Prayer"
                                                                 Elder Maurice Hilliard

Good Afternoon,

I am Elder Maurice Hilliard and I would like to welcome you all to this grand celebration of “The Village!”

Let Us Pray.

Dear Heavenly Father we just “Thank you Dear Lord God for this day!

Our Heavenly Father we know that this is a day that has been “Ordained by You!”

We are so grateful Dear Heavenly Father that You have drawn those who have come Dear Lord God for this "Noble Cause," to eradicate ignorance of epilepsy, Dear Lord to bring about awareness of how we are so interwoven and interlinked one with another and how we have truly been placed here to help and support one another.

With all of our various gifts and talents, Dear Heavenly Father even with whatever Dear Lord God the shortcomings we may have, Lord God we need each other! So bless us as we come together today and to be made more aware of how “You” want to form “Your Village” where everyone is dependent one on another.

Lord, let this be a time of enlightenment, awareness, and community. We thank you Dear Lord for this day. Now bless this day and let it be memorable for everyone  who came Dear Lord not only would they allow for it to stop here but they would be “Carriers” of the story, the story of You having come to make us One, to make us a Community and make us a Village, dependent one upon another.

We Thank You, We Praise You, and We Bless You. We pray this in Jesus’ name. We can all say together “Amen”!

  • The Trinity Broadcasting Network, TBN had me on their talk show "Joy In Our Town"
  • I have created a character named, "Mr. Kevin Bolden" to represent epilepsy.

The Messenger Films and The Village

The Village by Lowell G. Evans
www.lyrical4cast.com

“The Village” deals with Lowell G. Evans own personal story and struggles as a man with Epilepsy. The Character in his book is Kevin Bolden I have been incredibly blessed to get to know Lowell and have a copy of his book and its amazing! Its heartwarming, genuine and really points out the trouble and hardships one goes through in dealing with Epilepsy but also with society.

Cristobal Krusen founder and PRESIDENT of Messenger Films befriended Lowell at a Church function and at a recent function that he came to speak at he then explained to everyone the novel, “The Village.” He stated how he had read the novel and had done a “personal interview” with Lowell and found a “deeper message” in the story than the one written by Lowell.

He shared his views about making a movie from “The Village” that it would not only focus on epilepsy, which is why Lowell wrote the book, but on the response to “epilepsy” from society as well. This is what Cris found to be the “areas in the story” that would make it successful in the cinema!

When Cris introduced Lowell to the audience, he informed them of how they met over three (3) years ago at a church function for the men and how the friendship took off from that point. It was then when Lowell shared with everyone the importance of “epilepsy education” in society and especially in the schools. He stated how a movie is needed for this message to reach the millions of people with the condition. Lowell has a statement which says, “I may have epilepsy, but epilepsy does not have me.” The character that he has created in the novel, “Mr. Kevin Bolden” is a name going across the country to represent epilepsy.

Messenger Films and The Village, for Epilepsy Awareness are in the development stage of this project and are spreading the word about the movie that so many people want to see it happen. I for one think a movie about Epilepsy would help bring more awareness for many.

Mr. Donald Neslon says, "I Need A Village"

Mr. Donald Nelson, a high school junior at a local public school in Va.Beach has read the novel, "The Village". The book was a "suggestion" for him to read and here are the results.

Mr. Nelson found "Himself, his family, his friends, and many other people who he sees everyday in the novel. He quickly realized that it was a book of "Inspiration", Not only did he understand that the book was more than just about epilepsy, but he could relate it to the world he saw everyday!

Mr, Nelson decided to do a "book report" on the novel and his response to the book actually made the staff contact the author "Lowell G. Evans" for him to meet. He could not believe that the author was actually living in his city. This was a great opportunity for the student to share what was on his heart after reading a book that "was not assigned" to him! Donald informed the author, "Sir this is the first book I have ever read from beginning to end. I could not put it down,!"

The one thing truly standing out in the report from Mr. Donald Nelson was this, "Sir, I realize now that I do not just want a village, I need a village!"

The book has now been given to another student to read and this student actually called the author, Mr. Evans to say "Thank you" and he had not even read the novel!!

A Life Changing Moment

He Took Away My Complaints

The young man standing next to me is Mr. David Conti Jr. I saw him back in 1999 for the first time. D.J. as he is known by was at his school for the "Field Day Event" for the 1st Graders and Kindergarten.

I volunteered to help that day but was very tired. When the horn blew and all of the students came running across the field to the event, I said to myself, "Lowell, what are you doing here?" Again I was tired and was not ready to work with so many children at 8:30am after working all night.

Well when I saw this young man come across the playground at a "distance" I noticed he was on crutches! I said to myself, "Oh, he is going to have a hard time today." Then as he got closer, I noticed that he only had "one leg"!! I could believe my eyes because he could not have been more than 6 or 7 years old! I could not figure out what had happened to this "Little Boy".

I became scared thinking that he would come to my "Jump Rope Event". I did not know if I should tell him, "No , you can not do this." Then I said to myself if I tried to "help him" he might be embarrassed. Well when the Principal announced, "You can got to any event, win your points and come back to the table and get your prize", I dropped my head and PRAYED that he would not come to the "Jump Rope Event". Well you know "Prayer works".

When I looked up this young man with "One Leg" was the first one to line up for the 50 yard dash! I could not believe it! There he was "Enjoying Life with One Leg" and I was complaining about having to take 4 pills in the morning and 4 pills in the evening to manage my epilepsy!

I walked off the field that day "Thanking God" for what I had experienced! I never met D.J until 5 years later and this is when I found out he had lost his leg to "Cancer" at the age of 4 years old. He still played soccer and was a swimmer! He did everything but "complain". This is one of the people I dedicated my book "The Village" to because "He Took Away My Complaints".

The picture is from my book signing at my church New Life Providence.

Thank you,
